This side event was co-hosted by the Varda Group in cooperation with the Ocean & Climate Platform to discuss the Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean initiative, launched in November 2023 to compile contributions of civil society for the upcoming Third UNOC. The session discussed the messages from these contributions including the Protection Principle of explicitly shifting the burden of proof to the extractive industries to demonstrate the safety of their activities.
