Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – IPCC

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) to provide governments with scientific information they can use to develop climate policies. IPCC reports are also key inputs into international climate change negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Thousands of people from all over the world contribute to the IPCC’s work. The IPCC does not undertake new research or monitor climate-related data. Instead, it conducts assessments of the state of climate change knowledge on the basis of published and peer-reviewed scientific and technical literature. Scientists volunteer their time to assess the thousands of scientific papers published each year to provide a comprehensive summary of what is known about the drivers of climate change, impacts and future risks, and how adaptation and mitigation can reduce those risks. IPCC assessment reports are intended to be policy relevant, but not policy prescriptive. The IPPC’s first assessment report was released in 1990.

10th Session of the IPCC Working Group I (WGI)

There is more than a 90 percent probability that human action has contributed towards recent climate change according to the Summary for Policymakers of “Climate Change 2007: the Physical Science Basis,” which delegates approved at the meeting.

25th Session of the IPCC (IPCC-25)

Delegates accepted the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories and adopted its Overview Chapter, thereby realizing several years of work by the IPCC. Delegates also took action in relation to the IPCC programme and budget for 2007-09, further work on emission scenarios, election procedures, a policy and process for admitting observer organizations, the future work programme of the Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, consideration of a Special Report on Renewable Energy, and a review of the IPCCs terms of reference.

22nd Session of the IPCC (IPCC-22)

In the cooperative spirit of the IPCC, delegates approved a process for developing an AR4 Synthesis Report and a decision on the IPCC programme and budget for 2005-08.

18th Session of the IPCC (IPCC-18)

Delegates adopted the Synthesis Report of the IPCC’s Third Assessment Report, drawing on all previously approved and accepted IPCC reports to address nine policy-relevant questions identified by the IPCC, based on submissions by governments. It was the first such report prepared by the IPCC.

17th Session of the IPCC (IPCC-17)

Delegates accepted the actions of the three IPCC Working Groups with regard to adopting the three sections of the Third Assessment Report (TAR) while also considering progress on the TAR Synthesis Report and discussing the future of the IPCC.
