UN General Assembly

From 1992-1994, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin covered the United Nations General Assembly’s negotiations following up on the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED/Earth Summit). Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the UN General Assembly occupies a central position as the chief deliberative, policymaking, and representative organ of the United Nations.

During this period, the General Assembly adopted resolutions that established the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, initiated negotiations on the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and the UN Fish Stocks Agreement, organized the 1994 Conference of the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, and established 22 March as World Water Day.

The Earth Negotiations Bulletin has also covered many high-level events organized under UN General Assembly auspices. These events include Climate Summits, the High-Level Dialogue on Energy, events marking the UN's 75th Anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, and SDG Moments.
