Delegates to the Global Oceans Action Summit met today in a half-day closing plenary session, chaired by Hans Hoogeveen, Director General, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Netherlands.
Fred Boltz, Rockefeller Foundation, and Frits Thissen, Counselor for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Permanent Mission of the Netherlands to the EU, reported on Thursday’s two high-level roundtables. They addressed, inter alia: the urgency of actions to address blue growth; the impact of climate change on the success of blue growth; interactions with other intergovernmental bodies and processes; institutional action to end illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing; regional, integrated coastal management; and research, development and innovation in technology, taking into account social dimensions.
Angus Friday, Ambassador of Grenada to the US, reported on Thursday’s joint working group session, underscoring: the call for an information platform to share expertise regarding governance and capacity building; and the need for integrated approaches.
Session Chair Hoogeveen then presented the draft Chair’s summary of the meeting, inviting delegates to provide comments and amendments. Delegates asked that the report also address, inter alia: non-fish marine species as food sources; partnerships; information sharing; plastic pollution prevention strategies; overfishing and its link to ineffective subsidy schemes; and invasive aquatic species.
Closing statements were offered by: session Chair Hoogeveen; Árni Mathiesen, FAO; and Valerie Hickey, World Bank. They thanked the Summit’s organizing committee, recognizing contributions from Grenada, Indonesia, Norway and the US, and concluded with a call for urgent and meaningful actions on the ground, underscoring the need for a stand-alone SDG on oceans as part of the post-2015 development agenda.
Session Chair Hoogeveen closed the meeting at 1:30 pm.
