The 10th meeting of the Monaco Blue Initiative will convene under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, from 24-25 March. The meeting aims to provide participants an opportunity to discuss solutions for the development of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The meeting will consider the percentage of oceans covered by MPAs, as well as the level of protection and efficiency of MPAs, in view of the post-2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
The meeting will address three themes:
- How can we - collectively - achieve and go beyond the Aichi targets of developing the protected surface, whilst ensuring efficient protection?
- How does a coherent MPA network contribute to protecting species?
- What is the next step after evaluation of ecosystem services and how do we integrate findings into blue economic development?
Debates are expected to consider MPAs through the lens of High Seas preservation and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdictions negotiations, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the 5th International Marine Protected Areas congress, scheduled to convene in Canada in 2021.
