The 11th meeting of the Monaco Blue Initiative will convene under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, from 22-23 March 2020.
The meeting aims to provide participants the opportunity to discuss solutions for the development and scaling up of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
The meeting will address three thematic questions:
How can MPAs and other effective conservation measures be placed at the heart of international discussions, and how can stakeholders act collectively for their development?
What lessons can be learned from initiatives led by communities - and more generally by civil society - in the management and preservation of protected areas?
How can the development of a blue economy and a sustainable management of the Ocean in the fields of tourism, transport, energy, fishing and aquaculture be combined?
Debates are expected to consider MPAs through the lens of the negotiations on the protection of biodiversity in the high seas (BBNJ) with a view to an ambitious and robust treaty in 2020, and through the objectives and challenges of the CoP15 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, scheduled to convene in October 2020.
IISD Reporting Services, through its ENB+ Meeting Coverage, will provide a web update and a summary report from the 11th Meeting of the Monaco Blue Initiative.
