Daniel Bertram joined the Earth Negotiations Bulletin as a Writer in 2023. His interests in global environmental politics cut across different regimes, and he has previously reported on multilateral meetings relating to climate change, biodiversity, and food and agriculture, among others.
Trained as a socio-legal scholar, Daniel currently works as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Leiden in the DigiFood project, which examines legal and political struggles over agricultural data governance in the quest for sustainable food systems. His PhD research revolved around ongoing efforts to criminalise severe environmental destruction as "ecocide" at national, regional, and international levels. He has published on a range of environmental issues in leading legal and political science journals. Before pursuing an academic career, Daniel gained first policy experience as an intern at the German Ministry for Development (BMZ).
Born and raised in Germany, Daniel holds a PhD and an LLM in International Law from the European University Institute, an MPhil in Law from the University of Oxford, and an LLB in Global Law as well as a BSc in Public Governance from Tilburg University.
