Katarina Hovden

Katarina Hovden is a writer with the Earth Negotiations Bulletin and a PhD researcher at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. Since joining the ENB in 2019, she has covered negotiations and meetings on the ocean (BBNJ and International Seabed Authority) and plastics.
Katarina specialized in public international law and international environmental law in her master’s degrees, carrying out research on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (LLM, Universiteit van Amsterdam; LLM, University of Copenhagen). Her PhD thesis examines how initiatives such as those recognizing the personhood and rights of nature re-conceive human-nature relations, situating these among diverse efforts to reimagine legal relations and to safeguard multiple ways of ensuring coexistence.
She teaches in international environmental and climate law, European and international human rights law, as well as ecological jurisprudence and the rights of nature. She holds a BA (Honours) in Law (University of Cambridge). A Norwegian national, Katarina grew up on the south-western coast of Norway and in Yorkshire, UK.
