Richard de Ferranti is an Australian national who has worked as a writer with Earth Negotiations Bulletin since 2005, covering sustainable development, energy, and chemicals policies. Richard has reported on many international processes, including the UN Environment Assembly, the Global Environment Fund, the Clean Energy Ministerial, the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata chemicals conventions as well as the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management.

Richard has also been an independent consultant on sustainable energy issues in Southeast Asia, including contributing to reports on renewable energy uptake in the Mekong region for the Asian Development Bank, the US Agency for International Development, and the Global Green Growth Institute.

Richard has also worked as an Australian government official, including as a diplomat in the Asia-Pacific region, as a speechwriter for Australia’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in the Department of Climate Change, and in the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. His work for the Government of Australian has included legislating for renewable energy uptake, policies on emissions trading in the Asia-Pacific region, and working with industry to promote efficient energy use. He has a Bachelor’s degree (University of Sydney) and a Master’s degree in International Relations (Australian National University).
