The High-Level Consultation on Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda opened on Thursday, 21 March, with a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Water in the Post-2015 Agenda: Presentation and Discussion of the Results of the Global Thematic Consultation on Water, hosted by the Netherlands. HRH Willem-Alexander, The Prince of Orange, the Netherlands and Chair, UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB), and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, Chair, High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, opened the dialogue. The main outcomes of the Thematic Consultations on Water, under the streams of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Water Resources Management (WRM), and Wastewater Management and Water Quality (WWMWQ) were then briefly presented.

The process then broke into roundtables for discussions on the draft “Advanced Summary of Synthesis Report” of the Post-2015 Water Thematic Consultation and the draft “Wake Up Call,” developed through a Dutch initiative. The morning roundtable discussed the interlinkages between water and poverty reduction and sustainability. The afternoon roundtable focused on water, development and inclusive finance for WASH, WRM and WWMWQ. Outcomes of these roundtables were then fed back the Outcome Document for the Post-2015 Water Thematic Consultation, as well as into the Dutch "Wake-Up Call on Water," which was presented at the end of the day by Youth.

Highlights for Friday, 22 March 2013

The High-Level Consultation on Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda jointly convened on Friday 22 March with the celebrations of World Water Day on the theme of water cooperation. The morning began with an opening session on water cooperation, including the presentation of the “Water for Life” UN-Water Best Practices Award and a keynote speech by HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, Jordan. Four breakout sessions then convened on the themes: water cooperation is key to poverty eradication, social equity and gender equality; water cooperation creates economic benefits; water cooperation helps preserve water resources and protect the environment; and water cooperation builds peace.

The afternoon began with presentations by rapporteurs of the breakout groups of key challenges, solutions and actions for water cooperation. HRH Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange, the Netherlands and Chair of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) then presented a keynote speech. This was followed by convening of the High-Level Forum on the Global Thematic Consultation, which discussed the outcomes of the Post-2015 Global Thematic Consultation on Water. The forum then endorsed the outcome for forwarding to the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda (HLP) and the UN Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals.

This was followed by a live link-up with the UN General Assembly Interactive Dialogue on Water Cooperation, taking place at UN Headquarters in New York. Lilianne Ploumen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, the Netherlands, made a concluding speech. She also presented the outcome documents to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, and Co-Chair, HLP, Enikö Györi, Minister of State for EU Affairs, Hungary, and Rahmat Bobokalonov, Minister of Land Reclamation and Water Resources, Tajikistan, who will carry forward this message to other major fora, including the HLP, the Dushanbe Water Conference and the Budapest Water Summit. Following a presentation on the Budapest Water Summit, Youth brought the day to a close with the launch of “Walking for Water International,” calling on leaders “not just to talk, but to take the walk.”

The day was closed at 4:16pm. Return to this webpage on Monday, 25 March, for the IISD-RS Summary of the High-Level Consultation on Water in the Post-2015 Development.
