International Conference on Seafood Transparency and Sustainability

The Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency (JFRA), Waseda University, and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will host the International Conference on Seafood Transparency and Sustainability on the campus of Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan from 16-17 May 2017. Participants will include Japanese government representatives and Members of the National Diet, foreign governments, academia, the private sector, fishers and fish workers as well as non-governmental organizations and the media.

As the global appetite for seafood increases, more pressure is being put on the world’s fisheries. Japan, as host of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, hopes to play a leadership role in promoting fisheries transparency and sustainability. Participants at the conference will discuss, among other issues: illegal, unreported or unregulated (IUU) fishing; establishing import control and traceability systems; improving standards among fishing companies, retailers and consumers; enhancing international cooperation; and improving transparency throughout the supply chain.

Keynote speakers include Shigeu Ishiba, Member of the House of Representatives; Kazuo Sato, Director-General, Fisheries Agency of Japan; and Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
