High Level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
The High-level Thematic Debate on Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) took place on Thursday, 21 April 2016, at UN Headquarters, in New York. Following opening keynote speeches, plenary convened throughout the day for national statements on the theme “Action at All Levels: National Implementation.” In the morning, two panels took place on the theme “financing poverty eradication and sustainable development” addressing successful frameworks and strategies for financing SDGs and the paradigm shift towards low carbon societies, and enhancing international cooperation in tax and financial matters.
A high-level lunch discussed partnerships for SDG implementation. In the afternoon, two panels took place under the theme “technology and data for SDGs,” on enhancing technology development and cooperation for SDGs and harnessing the data revolution for SDGs. In the evening, a high-level reception addressed climate action in the context of sustainable development.

Vienna Convention COP 11 and Montreal Protocol MOP 29
The Preparatory Segment of the twenty-ninth Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP 29) and the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention (COP 11) opened on Monday, 20 November 2017, in Montreal, Canada. In the morning, delegates heard opening statements from dignitaries and discussed, inter alia: organizational matters; financial reports and budgets of the trust funds; and the replenishment of the Multilateral Fund (MLF) for 2018-2020.
In the afternoon, delegates addressed matters related to the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, including the status of ratification and data reporting. They also considered: nominations for essential-use exemptions (EUEs) for 2018, and critical-use exemptions (CUEs) for 2018-2019; use of controlled substances as process agents; key messages from the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) 2017 report; HCFCs phase-out; and energy efficiency.
The Budget Committee and the MLF replenishment contact group were established and held initial meetings.

Vienna Convention COP 11 and Montreal Protocol MOP 29
The preparatory segment of the twenty-ninth Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP 29) and the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Vienna Convention (COP 11) convened for its second day on Tuesday, 21 November 2017, in Montreal, Canada. In the morning, delegates discussed, inter alia, energy efficiency; safety standards; HFCs not listed in Annex F to the Protocol; nominations and appointments for membership in various Protocol bodies; and compliance and reporting issues.
In the afternoon, delegates addressed issues under the Vienna Convention, including the outcomes of the tenth meeting of the Ozone Research Managers (ORM) of the parties to the Vienna Convention, and the status of the Vienna Convention Trust Fund (VCTF). They also considered other matters, including an issue raised by Saudi Arabia on low-global-warming-potential (GWP) technologies for the air conditioning sector, and a concern related to hurricanes impacting Protocol implementation, raised by Grenada.
Contact groups on data reporting, replenishment, safety standards, and energy efficiency met at various points throughout the day. The Budget Committee also met during the lunch break.

8th Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference - Greener, Cleaner, Smarter!
The Eighth Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference opened on Wednesday, 8 June 2016, in Batumi, Georgia. The meeting convened under the theme ‘Greener, Cleaner, Smarter!’
In the morning, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Georgia, welcomed participants to the Conference, underscoring the importance of the EfE process as a platform for international cooperation on environmental issues and Georgia's commitment to a green economy and sustainable development. Christian Friis Bach, Executive Secretary, UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), called for the EfE process to continue to reach tangible achievements to help implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and take bold decisions at this Conference on the proposed Batumi Initiative on the Green Economy (BIG-E) and the Batumi Action for Cleaner Air (BACA). Ambassador Tomáš Pernický, Czech Republic, said the SDGs provide an opportunity for common ground for EfE activities. Ibrahim Thiaw, Deputy Executive Director, UN Environment Programme (UNEP), highlighted the second UN Environment Assembly’s (UNEA-2) resolutions on inclusive green economy and air quality and called on EfE participants to take actions to tackle air pollution and foster a green economy.
In the morning and afternoon, a plenary session and interactive discussion took place on ‘The environment dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: moving forward in the pan-European region.’ During discussion, participants focused on: cross-cutting issues; education, water and health; responsible consumption and production; and industry, innovation and infrastructure, among other topics.
Participants also addressed, ‘Keeping the pan-European environment under review,’ including a discussion of progress in establishing the Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS) in support of regular reporting in the pan-European region and key findings and policy messages of the European regional assessment of the Sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6).
In the evening, participants attended a reception and cultural event at the State Musical Centre of Batumi, hosted by the Government of Georgia.
