This dialogue was organized by the UN Environment Management Group to catalyze UN system-wide commitments to implement the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

The 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly opened with a gathering of world leaders from 23-29 September 2020. These leaders and other stakeholders participated in a series of summits, high-level meetings and side events.

Authors officially launched “Sustainable Use of Wild Species” and the “Diverse Values and Valuation of Nature” Assessment Reports, presenting their key findings and implications for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

After six intense days of deliberation, delegates acknowledged that they are still far from agreement on a new global biodiversity framework. A fifth meeting of the Working Group is now likely and, in the view of many participants, necessary.

At its second meeting, the Working Group commented on the zero draft of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework that was released in January 2020. Delegates approved the final recommendation of the meeting compiled by Co-Chairs Francis Ogwal (Uganda) and Basile van Havre (Canada), and adopted the meeting’s report. 

Attendees dove into impact stories from the Sustainable Ocean Initiative, discussions on the role of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework for ocean-related capacity building, and potential future directions for the programme.
