The Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) met at the League of Arab States in Cairo, Egypt. Approximately 100 representatives from governments, international organizations, and civil society attended the meeting.
On Monday morning, 17 October, a session was convened on a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. This was followed by a session on securing renewed political commitment for sustainable development, which included presentations on the outcomes of the civil society consultations. In the afternoon, a drafting group convened to discuss recommendations from the region to forward to the Rio+20 preparatory proces, which were then addressed in the larger group in the evening. After some debate and amendments, the recommendations were approved. The meeting adjourned at 10:45 pm.

In the morning of 16 October, during the welcoming ceremony, participants heard statements from a representative of Arab youth, Adel Farid Abdel-Kader, Officer-in-Charge, United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office for West Asia (UNEP/ROWA), Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Coordinator for Rio+20, Maged Abdelfattah Abdelaziz, Permanent Representative of Egypt to the UN and Vice-Chair of the Bureau for the UNCSD Preparatory Process, representing the African Group, Rima Khalaf, Executive Secretary, UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Tuwaijri, Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, League of Arab States (LAS).
Following the opening statements, a session was held on assessing progress to date and gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development. In the afternoon, sessions were convened on: new and emerging challenges facing the Arab Region; and the international framework for sustainable development.
