Highlights for Friday, 2 December 2011
UNCSD
At the close of the UNECE RPM a draft Co-Chairs’ summary (E/ECE/RPM/2011/2/Add.1) of the meeting was circulated for comment. Following the integration of these comments a copy of the document is to be posted on the UNECE’s website. The summary is organised around the three main issues of the RPM, namely an assessment of progress on the implementation of outcomes of major sustainable development summits, the green economy in the context of sustainable development and the eradication of poverty, and institutional framework for sustainable development.

The summary includes references to: Sustainable Development Goals; a green economy roadmap; moving beyond GDP; the Aarhus Convention; change in sustainable consumption and production patterns; poverty and social inclusion; a technology pool; finance; the weaknesses of institutions for sustainable development; and various approaches to improve institutions such as UNEP, the CSD, ECOSOC or create new ones such as a Council for Sustainable Development.

For the hosts of Rio+20, Maria Luisa Escorel, Deputy Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of Brazil to the UN and other international organisations, delivers a keynote address on expectations for the UNCSD in 2012.
Jeremy Wates, Director of the European Environment Bureau, a panellist during the IFSD discussion. He supported Brazil’s proposal for a UNCSD initiative on environmental democracy inspired by Principle 20 of the Rio Declaration on access to information and participation in decision-making.

On Friday morning delegates engaged in the third and final thematic discussion, on the institutional framework for sustainable development chaired by Janusz Zaleski, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of the Environment, Poland.
