The Sixth session of the Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD 2020) will address the theme, “2020-2030: A Decade to Deliver a Transformed and Prosperous Africa through the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.”
The aim of the Forum is to advance integrated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), with the goals set out in the African Union’s Agenda 2063. As the official Regional Forum for the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the meeting’s theme is aligned to that of the 2020 HLPF, “Accelerated action and transformative pathways: realizing the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.”
The Forum will seek to provide an action-oriented, multi-stakeholder platform to rally member states and partners to take urgent and transformative actions in the coming decade to achieve the aspiration of “leaving no one behind” and in creating an inclusive, resilient and sustainable world.
In order to promote an integrated approach to the review of the 17 SDGs, the discussions will be clustered around five sub-themes, dubbed “the five Ps”: People (SDGs 1-5); Prosperity (SDGs 10-11); Planet (SDGs 6, 12, 13 and 15); Peace (SDG 16); and Partnerships (SDG 17).
The Forum will also seek to enhance integrated implementation with other relevant global and regional frameworks, including the Paris Agreement, the SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the New Urban Agenda, the Agreement Establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area, and the Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa by Year 2020.
The meeting is expected to generate three key outputs:
Policy reports on the five ARFSD sub-themes;
An outcome document containing agreed regional priorities, policy options and recommendations in the form of key messages to accelerate implementation of the two agendas and to serve as the region’s collective input to the 2020 HLPF; and
A report of the proceedings of the Forum, including salient issues and priorities, and recommendations pertaining to the Forum theme and sub-themes.
The official opening of ARFSD 2020 will take place on 25 February, with a high-level panel discussion. It will be preceded by a number of Pre-Forum events on 24 February, including: a regional workshop to strengthen the capacity of major groups and other stakeholders to engage in the follow-up and review and implementation of the two agendas; a regional workshop to strengthen integrated voluntary national reviews of the 2030 and 2063 agendas; the African Science, Technology and Innovation Forum; and expert workshops and other thematic meetings aligned with the theme and sub-themes of the Forum. A special session of the Regional Coordination Mechanism for Africa (RCM-Africa) will also convene.
