GEF Council 46 Side Events: Scaling Up Sustainable Transport Together

On Sunday May 25, the side event on “Scaling Up Sustainable Transport Together” convened in parallel with the 5th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly and the 46th GEF Council Meeting in Cancun, Mexico. The session was organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the GEF Secretariat to discuss the successes and challenges faced in implementing sustainable transport programs in developing countries. Bruce Dunn, ADB, moderated the discussion and stressed the importance of sustainable transport to development and poverty reduction. Panelists included: Hiroaki Takiguchi, GEF Secretariat; Bernardo Baranda, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy; Abel Lopez, World Bank; and Rafael Acevedo-Duanas, Inter-American Development Bank. The discussion centered on the costs and benefits of sustainable transport programs, and speakers identified the need to better communicate the GEF’s work on the sector to the public.
