RESOLUTION ON THE REPORT OF THE UNCED

When the UNGA established UNCED in Resolution 44/228, one of the provisions required UNCED to report back to the General Assembly and that, upon the conclusion of the Conference, the General Assembly would endorse the results of the Conference. Thus, the first agenda item for the Razali Group was to draft a resolution endorsing the report submitted by UNCED. The proposed resolution endorses the Rio Declaration, the Forest Principles and Agenda 21 and welcomes the Climate Change and Biodiversity Conventions. It also urges governments, NGOs and inter-governmental organizations (IGOs) to take the actions called for in these documents; calls upon all concerned to implement UNCED commitments and recommendations; decides to include a standing item in the UNGA agenda on "Implementation of decisions and recommendations of the UNCED"; and finally decides to convene a special session by 1997 to review and appraise Agenda 21. This is the first resolution to be negotiated by the Razali Group.
