WHO:

Mr. G. Ozolins of the World Health Organization said that WHO has taken various steps to see that its programmes are responsive to UNCED and Agenda 21. A new global strategy for health and environment was formulated and subsequently endorsed by the World Health Assembly in May 1993. While WHO's traditional concern for environmental health in rural areas will remain a primary theme in its new Plan of Action to implement the Strategy, special emphasis will be placed on urban areas where the population and environmental problems are increasing at an alarming rate. WHO has launched a new initiative to support the work in countries to ensure that health and environment considerations are incorporated into national plans for sustainable development. In relation to decisions on environmentally-sound management of toxic chemicals, the International Programme on Chemical Safety of WHO, ILO and UNEP has broadened its objectives to respond to the requests addressed by UNCED, in particular in capacity-building. Preparations are also well under way for convening the International Conference on Chemical Safety, which is scheduled for April 1994 in Stockholm.
