HOLY SEE:

Archbishop Renato R. Martino noted that substantial progress has been made on the post-UNCED initiatives. With regard to the Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the Holy See continues to stress the need for due consideration of the ethical dimensions of problems affecting developing countries and SIDS. The Holy See reminds all States of the fundamental primacy of the human person when they consider environment and development issues. He stressed the need to change consumption patterns and lifestyles, readjust economic systems and maintain the correct emphasis on the human person.
