MEXICO:
The representative from Mexico said that the
environment should not be given sectoral treatment but should be
viewed in light of developing planning. The CSD should be a place
for political dialogue. The intersessional working groups should
help solve the problems of technology transfer and financial
resources and identify solutions involving the GEF and the Bretton
Woods institutions. Mexico welcomes the progress made so far in the
INCD and noted that this Convention is important to Latin America
as many countries in the region suffer from desertification. She
stressed the need to focus on the global nature of desertification.
Mexico also supports the Conference on the Sustainable Development
of Small Island Developing States and the Conference on Straddling
and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks.
