BAHRAIN:

The representative from Bahrain said that the Earth Summit reaffirmed the value of UNEP and Bahrain reasserts the importance of UNEP. Over the last 12 years the Persian Gulf region has faced many environmental problems due to two wars. Protection of marine life and desalination plants from oil pollution has become a major issue. Bahrain called on UNEP to reassess the long-term environmental consequences of the Gulf War and other regional problems. With regard to the Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, Bahrain noted with satisfaction the progress made so far and hopes that the resumed PrepCom will lay down the foundations for the Conference. It is crucial to better meet the needs of the peoples of these countries.
