SOUTH PACIFIC FORUM:

New Zealand, on behalf of the nine members of the South Pacific Forum that are also members of the United Nations (Australia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu), supported both the Conference on the Sustainable Development and the Conference on Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks. With regard to the latter, the South Pacific Forum welcomes the convening of two more sessions to make tangible progress on problems facing the sustainable use and conservation of fisheries resources. They support all efforts to bring coastal States and distant water fishing nations to a closer understanding of the responsible conservation of such resources. Since the global moratorium on driftnet fishing went into effect on 31 December 1992, there have been no allegations of renewed driftnet activity in the South Pacific. Yet, the South Pacific Forum remains concerned about reports of ongoing driftnet activities in other regions, such as the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic.
