BOTSWANA:

Maotoanong L. Sebina noted that Botswana is affected by drought and desertification and related social and economic consequences. Over the past decade Botswana has been experiencing the most severe drought, which has resulted in the decline of borehole yields, deterioration in water quality and food shortages. Botswana has been involved in the regional programmes under the auspices of the UN and Southern African Development Community designed to combat drought and desertification. However, without sufficient financial and other resources these programmes cannot be effectively implemented. Botswana appealed to the international community to accord high priority to programmes to combat desertification. Botswana has also participated in the INCD and hopes that the Convention will encourage the international community to cover all the major aspects and establish credible mechanisms for combatting desertification and drought.
