CAMBODIA:
The representative said that although Cambodia has
just been through more than 20 years of war, they are aware of the
need for common solutions to global problems. The effects of war
have caused enormous damage to the environment. The main
environmental problems include desertification, drought, flooding,
soil erosion, air and water pollution. Before 1969 forests covered
73% of Cambodia; today it is at 35-40%. The solution to environment
and development problems requires international cooperation based
on the sovereign rights of nations. However, no country can exploit
its natural resources to the detriment of a neighboring country.
Cambodia hopes for financial assistance in achieving economic and
political stability and social progress.
