Other comments:
A number of other issues were commented on
during the course of the debate. Uzbekistan mentioned the
importance of addressing transboundary use of water resources in
the Convention and IGADD stressed the importance of water
resources development. Argentina, Burkina Faso and the WMO
mentioned that the promotion of alternative energies is important
in combatting desertification. WMO, UNSO and IGADD said that the
convention should provide mechanisms to strengthen capacities to
deal with drought. Austria mentioned the issue of environmental
refugees and Peru mentioned problems caused by out-migration.
Italy and Austria mentioned the importance of the section on
dispute settlement mechanisms.
