III. RESPONSIBILITIES OF REGIONAL FISHERIES ORGANIZATIONS OR ARRANGEMENTS

The US said that regional organizations should emphasize a multi-species ecosystem approach and take into account the relationship between species and habitats. Regional arrangements should encourage scientific catch data, in an agreed format and timeframe. Sweden said that the Baltic Sea Commission might constitute a model for regional and subregional fisheries cooperation. The EC said that exchange of technical information between regions could strengthen resource management. The Philippines said that regional fishery organizations should promote information collection and dissemination. Trinidad and Tobago said there should be a mechanism to facilitate exchange of information between commissions, perhaps with FAO assistance. India suggested a new sub-paragraph (k) to provide assistance to developing states entering the fisheries.
