COMPATIBILITY AND COHERENCE BETWEEN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION MEASURES FOR THE SAME STOCKS

As a lengthy debate of this topic took place Wednesday, discussion on this matter did not take too much time. With regard to the measures that should be adopted in case negotiations fail, a delegate pointed out that coastal States are not always able to establish conservation measures. In this case, distant water fishing vessels should comply with certain international minimum standards. Another intervention highlighted the difficulties developing States may have in conducting stock assessments, and called for further international assistance.
