CHAIR'S ACTIVITIES

Since August, the Chair, Satya Nandan, has been holding informal consultations with interested governments. The focus of these consultations has been to discuss the draft negotiating text that was circulated by Nandan at the end of the July session. Thus far, delegates have reached agreement on approximately 90 percent of the text. Outstanding issues remain and the inter-sessional informal meetings will likely resume in January. The issues on which agreement has yet to be achieved include the precautionary approach, the concept of Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY), and the complementarity between the measures adopted for high seas fisheries and those applied within the EEZs.
