Delegates successfully completed a challenging agenda of 89 items, 117 documents, and 5,000 pages, encompassing issues from big cats conservation, to tree species, to fish, sharks and rays, marine turtles, seahorses, Tibetan antelopes, and saiga antelope, preparing the way for the next Conference of the Parties in Panama in November.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) opened an important year for the protection of endangered species with its first in-person meeting since the 18th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in August 2019.
The seventy-fourth meeting of the CITES Standing Committee (SC74) convened to prepare for COP 19 in Panama later this year. The CITES SC considered the following issues, among many others:
- the CITES Strategic vision (2021–2030) and cooperation with other biodiversity related conventions;
- the role of CITES in reducing the risk of future zoonotic disease;
- CITES and forests and the Task Force on illegal trade in CITES-listed tree species;
- compliance matters and the Review of Significant Trade in species listed under the Convention as well as the review of trade in animal specimens reported as produced in captivity;
- wildlife crime enforcement support in West and Central Africa;
- CITES Big Cats Task Force, elephants, rhinos, totoaba, pangolins, jaguars, and other species related matters; and
- the contribution of sustainable use of CITES-listed species to livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples and local communities as well as the engagement of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in CITES processes.
CITES aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten the survival of the species. The species covered by CITES are listed in three Appendices, according to the degree of protection they need. Appendix I includes species threatened with extinction. Appendix II includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but where trade must be controlled to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival. Appendix III contains species that are protected in at least one country, which has asked other CITES parties for assistance in controlling the trade.
The CITES Standing Committee provides policy guidance to the Secretariat concerning the implementation of the Convention and oversees the management of the Secretariat's budget. It also coordinates and oversees the work of the CITES Plants and Animals Committees, carries out tasks given to it by the COP, and drafts resolutions for consideration by the COP.
