Participants took stock of progress and challenges to date in meeting the goals of the 2014 New York Declaration on Forests, while highlighting innovative areas of action.
Parties will discuss lessons learned from the first Global Stocktake, progress on developing reporting tools under the Paris Agreement’s enhanced transparency framework, and support for developing countries to prepare their biennial transparency reports (which all parties are to submit in 2024).
A side event organized by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) at the 19th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF19) will launch the publication of the first global synthesis report on international forests governance in 14 year.
Talks at the 19th Session of the UN Forum on Forests will focus on enhancing forest-based economic, social and environmental benefits; significantly increasing the area of protected forests worldwide; and steps to advance sustainable forest management.
Discussions focused on kickstarting the implementation of the new BBNJ treaty, especially by identifying marine protected areas. Many also underscored ocean-climate linkages and highlighted the importance of global cooperation on ocean science.
