A view of the “Broken Chair” sculpture from the Palais des Nations On Wednesday, delegates to the 14th AGM of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) continued their deliberations in a plenary session on ‘climate-smart mining’, and in six parallel sessions over the rest of the day on ‘forest-smart mining’, voluntary instruments, mine closure, innovation, responsible supply chains, and local content strategies. Delegates raised concerns about diverse issues, including on land and catchment restoration at abandoned and orphan mines, opportunities to develop the quality of local manufacturing and services for mining and non-mining sectors, and the influence of technology change on employment of mine workers. They took note of the great increase in demand for certain metals and minerals used in electric vehicles, and considered the role of government in developing laws and policies to mitigate the carbon and material footprint of the mining industry. They exchanged views on the best ways to create an enabling environment for investment, and the possibilities for achieving a circular economy in the mining sector. They also discussed recent initiatives by mining companies to contribute to reforestation and biodiversity protection. At lunchtime, delegates took part in an interactive session about using digital resources for the governance of the extractives sector, and heard a presentation on ‘How can Africa get the most value from its diamonds?’ by Vanessa Ushie, African Development Bank. The AGM’s second day concluded with informal discussions in the hallways, as IGF participants continued to reflect on the experiences and initiatives presented for responsible and sustainable mining. Delegates to the second meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 2) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) continued their deliberations on Tuesday, considering the following agenda items: preparation for the follow-up to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020; a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism under the Nagoya Protocol on ABS; specialized international ABS instruments under Nagoya Protocol Article 4(4); resource mobilization; the financial mechanism; and capacity building, technical and scientific cooperation, and technology transfer. The fourth Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Forum opened on Wednesday, 2 May 2018, at the Convento do Beato in Lisbon, Portugal. Under the overarching theme of ‘Leaving No One Behind,’ the two-day Forum is: reviewing the latest evidence of progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 (access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all; exploring scalable innovations to achieve the three SEforALL objectives of electricity access, accelerating renewable energy and improving energy efficiency; and reflecting on lessons learned regarding what is needed to reach the “last mile” populations. Highlights of the first day included: Presentation of results from the 2018 Tracking SDG 7 Energy Progress Report; A high-level panel discussion on policy matters, focusing on national strategies to accelerate progress towards SDG 7, including perspectives on how to address challenges in meeting sustainable energy and climate goals; A “Wake Up Call” from Rachel Kyte, SEforALL CEO, on what is needed to achieve SDG 7; Three “Deep Dive” sessions exploring the themes of: electricity for all in sub-Saharan Africa; clean fuels for all; and cooling for all; Nine parallel discussion sessions organized by SEforALL partners; An interactive session on gender inclusive investing in clean energy, which discussed linkages between SDGs 5 (gender equality) and 7; and A marketplace on solutions to achieve clean and affordable energy for all.
