Tom Land, MOP-17 President, COP-7 President Thierno Lo, Minister of Environment and the Protection of Nature, Senegal, and Marco González, Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat
 
On behalf of the Indian government, Namo Narain Meena, Minister of State for Environment and Forests, India (left), offered to host MOP-18 and other related ozone meetings during 2006.
 
 
 
 
David Doniger, Natural Resources Defense Council (left), recalled the days when the US was the leader in the ozone regime, noting his hope that it would regain that reputation in the coming years. Jukka Uosukainen, Co-Chair of the replenishment contact group, Finland, reported on results of the replenishment contact group. Jean-Louis Wallace, Chair of the budget contact group, Canada, reported on the work carried out in the budget contact group.

Marie Andrea, Dominica, and Zoila Gonzales de Gutierrez, Dominican Republic (left) The UK, as the EU and its member states, said much remained to be done to understand the science of ozone processes ,and the relationship between ozone and climate change.
 
 
The EC (left) highlighted difficult issues to be resolved at the multilateral level for maintaining parties' efforts to ensure recovery of the ozone layer, including the need to: cease ODS use, especially when alternatives are available; minimize essential uses of CFC and methyl bromide; identify appropriate mechanisms for destruction and disposal of ODS; and ensure that the phase out of controlled substances by Article 5 countries is not undermined by illegal trade. She underscored the EC is demonstrating its commitment to pave the way forward and to encourage developing countries to pursue an ozone-friendly path. Rejoice Mabudafhasi, Deputy Minister, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, South Africa (right), warned against sending any messages that the ozone battle has been won, and urged delegates not to delay any commitments to phase out ODS.

UNEP launched a new guide and web sites to help governments better protect the ozone layer, incluing a "Guide for National Ozone Officers", a service designed to enable National Ozone Officers to build their own websites, and the French language version of the "Ozzy Ozone" children's website (www.ozzyozone.org)
