Zahid Hamdard

Zahid Hamdard joined Earth Negotiation Bulletin as a Writer in August 2022.  He brings more than 10 years of experience in international development including his work on the Montreal Protocol, UNFCCC, and other MEAs while representing Afghanistan. He brings experience in the field of international environmental policy work, implementing climate change mitigation projects in Afghanistan, and spearheading cooperation arrangements at the regional level for the implementation of Montreal Protocol in South Asia. In previous roles, he has also served as National Coordinator to the Montreal Protocol, Basel Convention and UNFCC for Afghanistan. 

Previously, Zahid has worked with UNEP, UNDP, Global Affairs Canada (based in Kabul) and with the Ministry of Finance of Afghanistan. At UNEP in Kabul, he helped establish the Montreal Protocol Unit within the Afghan Environmental Protection Agency. With UNDP, Zahid implemented a three-year community infrastructure and resilience-building project across Afghanistan. At the Ministry of Finance, he collaborated closely with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Islamic Development Bank on financing of public infrastructures, public finance, and safeguarding (social and environmental) policies associated with infrastructure financing.   

He has a BSc degree in Chemical Sciences from Peshawar University in Pakistan, and a MA degree in Environmental Economics, Policy and Law from Yale School of Environment, Yale University.
