The launch of the expanded Policy Brief for African Stakeholders on Forests, Trees and Poverty Alleviation in Africa will raise awareness of the role of forests and trees to alleviate poverty. It will also share a summary of the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on the topic. The Brief will aid policy and decision makers by ensuring policy and management measures that enable forests and trees to alleviate poverty in Africa are tailored to specific contexts.
The expanded Policy Brief was prepared by the Global Forest Expert Panel (GFEP) based on the report Forests, Trees and the Eradication of Poverty: Potential and Limitations. A Global Assessment Report, which was launched in October 2020. Both the report and resultant policy brief contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by highlighting the nexus between SDG 1 (no poverty) and SDG 15 (life on land), as well as relevant links to other SDGs.
This event is being convened by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) GFEP Programme. The GFEP Programme aims to consolidate and communicate information and scientific expertise to governments and intergovernmental processes related to forests and trees. The Programme focuses on objective and independent scientific assessments of key issues to support more informed decision making at the regional and global levels.
