14 January 2004 | The intergovernmental consultation on strengthening the scientific base of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) opened today at UNEP Headquarters at the Gigiri complex in Nairobi, Kenya. The meeting was opened by UNEP Deputy Executive Director Shafqat Kakahel and was also addressed by UNEP Executive Director Klaus Töpfer. Delegates addressed organizational matters, elected officers, and met in two Plenary sessions to address questions regarding the likely gaps and types of assessment needs with respect to the environment and environmental change, and to assess how UNEP and other organizations are currently meeting assessment needs.
