CITES SC65On Friday, the Standing Committee met for a final day of deliberations over the many agenda items discussed during the week, setting timeframes and deadlines on several issues to boost compliance with the Convention, and hearing back from the in-session working groups.

Participants discussed Asian Big Cats and agreed, among others, to a recommendation to establish an inter-sessional working group to report back at SC66. On rhinos, the Committee adopted recommendations requesting Mozambique submit: its national rhino action plan to the Secretariat by 31 October 2014; a report to the Secretariat and the Working Group on Rhino about progress made against timeframes and milestones on the implementation of the action plan, by 31 January 2015; and a comprehensive report on progress made with the implementation of the action plan, to the Secretariat and the Working Group on Rhino, by 31 March 2015.

On cheetahs, the Standing Committee mandated the newly established inter-sessional working group to coordinate with the Secretariat on the organization of a workshop before the next Animals Committee meeting.

On elephants, the Standing Committee recommended, among other issues, that Thailand submit to the Secretariat a revised National Ivory Action Plan by 30 September 2014, which includes a list of actions to be achieved by 31 March 2015. The recommendation also notes a progress report on these actions should be submitted by 15 January 2015. The Standing Committee, with the Secretariat, will subsequently make additional recommendations, as appropriate. A further progress report is to be submitted by 31 March 2015, after which progress will be assessed and conveyed to Thailand. In the event the SC is not satisfied that the requested actions have been achieved, it shall proceed in accordance with the provisions in Resolution Conf.14.3, paragraph 30 on suspension of trade.
