Highlights for Wednesday, 21 March 2012
The 6th Aviation and the Environment Summit (AES-6) opened on Wednesday, 21 March 2012, at the Hotel President Wilson in Geneva, Switzerland. Co-organized by the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), with Airports Council International (ACI), the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO), the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Coordinating Council for Aerospace Industries Association (ICCAIA), the Summit focused on ways of delivering sustainable air transport.

The Summit opened with a keynote address by Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Tourism, South Africa, and a presentation on the state of play by Paul Steele, Executive Director, Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). The Summit then convened a series of panel sessions. On Wednesday morning two panels discussed “Sustainable Development - The Role of Aviation” and “Developing Sustainable Capacity.” Olivier Jankovec, Director, ACI, then presented an industry announcement highlighting an increase in the number of airports receiving accreditation under the airport carbon accreditation schemes. On Wednesday afternoon two panels convened on “Biofuels - Tackling the Key Scale-Up Challenges” and “Securing a Global Framework.”

Subsequently, Bruce Parry, Bombardier Aerospace, introduced the International Aerospace Environmental Group, a new trade association formed by major aerospace corporations. A workshop on aviation and communication was also held in the evening, hosted by CNN TASK. Wednesday concluded with a Gala Dinner at the UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO), where participants were addressed by Tony Tyler, Director General and CEO, IATA.
