International Conference on Green Economy and Sustainable Mountain Development: Opportunities and Challenges in View of Rio+20

The “International Conference on Green Economy and Sustainable Mountain Development: Opportunities and Challenges in View of Rio+20,” organized by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), with support from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), opened today in Kathmandu, Nepal. In the morning, participants heard opening remarks, including a keynote speech by RK Pachauri, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They listened to presentations and participated in discussions on mountain ecosystem services. In the afternoon participants split into six parallel panels and working group discussions on: managing water for green economy and growth; carbon services in mountain ecosystems; mountain biodiversity for green economy; recreational and cultural services from mountain systems; valuation of ecosystem services and policies for crediting these services; and poverty, equity and sustainable mountain development.

Mountain ecosystem services:
Scope, opportunities and challenges
in the context of the green economy

Madhu Verma, Indian Institute of Forest Management, spoke about valuation and accounting of ecosystem services from a Himalayan forest perspective.

Promode Kant, Institute of Green Economy, spoke about the carbon sink potential in mountain land use systems with special reference to the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region.
   

SP Singh, Indian National Science Academy, presented on mountain biodiversity and recreational ecosystem services in the context of green economy.

Ramesh Anand Vaidya, ICIMOD, talked about the role of Himalayan water and hydropower in the context of green economy.

Matthias Jurek, UNEP, presented on governance options for sustainable mountain development, featuring examples from different mountain regions.

Ganesh Raj Joshi, Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal, chaired the working group on recreational and cultural services from mountain systems

Gopal Kadekodi, Centre for Multi-Disciplinary Development Research, chaired the working group on valuation of ecosystem services and policies for crediting these services.

Jorn Sorensen, UNDP, chaired the working group on poverty, equity, and sustainable mountain development.
