Late Breaking News from CSD-5

Updated 11 April 1997

On Friday, delegates to CSD-5 heard reports on the Rio Conventions, regional activities and other intersessional events during a morning Plenary. In the afternoon, they considered national reporting, the Barbados Programme of Action and the budget.

In a parallel session, delegates conducted dialogues with youth in the morning and the scientific and technical communities in the afternoon.

Beginning on Monday, delegates will negotiate the text of the draft final document under the co-chairmanship of the Co-Chairs of the CSD's Ad hoc Intersessional Working Group -- Mr. Derek Osborn (United Kingdom) and Amb. Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim (Brazil). In the morning they are expected to address the section on "Integration of Economic, Social and Environmental Objectives" and in the afternoon they are expected to examine the section on "Sectors and Issues."

The CSD Bureau also agreed that the Vice-Chairs will undertake informal consultations on the following issues:

  • Forests - Ambassador Bagher Asadi (Iran)
  • Institutional Issues (Section D of the draft final document) - Ambassador John Ashe (Antigua and Barbuda)
  • Draft Programme of Work of the CSD for 1998-2002 (E/CN.17/1997/2 (para 146 and Table)) -- Dr. Czeslaw Wieckowski (Poland)
  • Possible Elements for a Statement of Commitment (Section A of the draft final document and E/CN.17/1997/CRP.2) -- Ms. Monika Linn-Locher (Switzerland)
