The Asia and Pacific Regional Implementation Meeting on Rio+20 Outcomes, convened by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), opened today in Bangkok, Thailand. During the opening session, participants heard statements from Noeleen Heyzer, ESCAP Executive Secretary, Young-Woo Park, Regional Director, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, UN Environment Programme, and Daniele Ponzi, Asian Development Bank. They also heard a video address by Nurlan Kapparov, Minister of Environmental Protection, Kazakhstan, and CSD-20 Chair, and a statement by Kim Lee Choy, speaking for Youth and Children. Delegates then elected officers and adopted the agenda. Vannak Chhun, Cambodia, was elected chair of the meeting.
Rae Kwon Chung, Director, Environment and Development Division, ESCAP, then presented the main points from the Rio+20 outcome, and outlined issues for regional consideration. Nikhil Seth, Director, Division for Sustainable Development, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, presented lessons learned from the CSD, focusing on the High-Level Political Forum and the OWG on SDGs.
Panel discussions were then convened on the “Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development: Global and regional dimensions” and “SDGs and the Post-2015 Development Agenda,” followed by country and Major Group statements. In addition, presentations were made on the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production and the ADB’s support for green growth.
In the evening, a reception was held for meeting participants.
