Jean Jacques Landrot, Interafrican Forest Industries Association (IFIA), noted that ethics could have either a positive or negative effect on African exports to European markets and that implementing forest law enforcement and governance and certification has been difficult.

Lau Nygaard, DLH Nordisk, spoke on the challenges that certification and illegal logging pose for the timber industry.

CSAG-TAG Workshop

CSAG-TAG Workshop participants mutually agreed, inter alia, that: producers and consumers have roles to play in eliminating illegal logging and associated trade; the issue of illegality encompasses a range of issues, such as worker rights, gender and trade, and money laundering; and capacity building is critical and needs to be applied not only to the timber sector, but other sectors as well.

Rudolph Schlepfer (left), CSAG-TAG workshop facilitator, congratulated the joint group on its concrete results and convincing recommendations. He called the report a very important basis for further decision-making within the ITTO to improve understanding about illegal logging and trade.

Chair Jan McAlpine, US
Manoel Sobral Filho, ITTO Executive Director
Eva Mülller, Secretariat
Chair McAlpine highlighted gender equity and transparency in CSAG/TAG.

Manoel Sobral Filho, ITTO Executive Director, proposed, and delegates agreed, that the short-term action items be folded into existing decisions and activities in the Biennial Work Programme.
