Summary Highlights of the Meeting

GCSS-XII-GMEFWednesday, 22 February 2012

On Wednesday morning delegates convened in the COW, and for a ministerial moderated plenary discussion on Rio+20 and beyond: responding to the challenges. The closing GCSS-12/GMEF plenary took place in the afternoon when the President’s Summary on the outcome of ministerial consultations was introduced. Delegates adopted seven decisions on: accounting, financial and administrative arrangements between UNEP and the MEAs; enhancing cooperation and coordination with the chemicals and wastes cluster; a consultative process on financing options for chemicals and wastes; the world environment situation; IEG; sustainable consumption and production; and the UNEP 40th Anniversary Ministerial Statement. GC/GMEF President Federico Ramos de Armas, (Spain), graveled the meeting to a close at 7:25pm.

Tuesday, 21 February 2012

On Tuesday, delegates convened for ministerial consultations in plenary in the morning and afternoon. Five parallel ministerial round-table discussions on the theme “green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication” also took place in the morning. In the afternoon the roundtable discussions focused on IFSD. The COW as well as drafting groups convened throughout the day.

Monday, 20 February 2012

Degates at the 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Environment Ministerial Forum (GCSS-12/GMEF) convened in the morning for the opening ceremony, followed by consideration of organizational matters and policy statements. In the afternoon, delegates convened for ministerial consultations in a symposium on “ environmental change and global responses in 2012.” The Committee of the Whole (COW) also met in the afternoon.
