ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA:

On behalf of the 12 Member States of the Caribbean Community (Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago), the delegate from Antigua and Barbuda said that the empowerment of women is an essential factor in the achievement of population objectives, sustained economic growth and sustainable development. The Member States of CARICOM support the view that the issues and recommendations of the final document should be forward-looking, operational and pragmatic; its recommendations should take into account regional diversity and country-specific conditions, such as those in the Caribbean; and any action programme should be free-standing and operational in nature, while building on the important achievements of the 1974 and 1984 population conferences.
