INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' CAUCUS:

On behalf of several indigenous organizations throughout the world, the Indigenous Peoples' Caucus stated that indigenous homelands harbor more endangered plant and animal species than all the world's natural reserves. The Caucus called upon Governments to: implement the Convention's stated requirements that Governments respect, protect and encourage the sustainable traditions of resource use; establish an Indigenous Peoples' Division, staffed by indigenous people, in the Secretariat; and incorporate the indigenous perspective on property, ownership and knowledge into Convention issues, such as intellectual property rights and benefit-sharing.
