Highlights for Monday, 31 January 2011

COFI 29


The 29th Session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) convened in plenary sessions throughout the day on Monday.

COFI elected the Chair and Vice-Chairs and designated members of a Drafting Committee, adopted the agenda and arrangements for the session, addressed progress in the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF) and related instruments, and discussed the decisions and recommendations of the 12th Session of the COFI Sub-Committee on Fish Trade.

Ann Tutwiler, Deputy Director General, FAO, said the organization looks forward to the recommendations of the COFI.
Mohammad Pourkazemi (Iran)was elected Chair of COFI 29.

Statements and Presentations
Pablo Eplilea (Chile) highlighted the need to progress towards sustainable fisheries.
Ideli Salvatti (Brazil) called on COFI to ensure the economic viability of fisheries and aquaculture in developing countries.

Michael Pearson (Canada) was elected as one of the vice-chairs of the Committee.

Fatma Sobo (Tanzania) highlighted the preparation of a tuna management plan for the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF).

Johann Gudmundsson (Iceland) emphasized that the FAO is the most appropriate forum for addressing fisheries.
Xiaobing Liu (China) highlighted his country's efforts in implementing the CCRF.

Jane Willing (New Zealand) emphasized that FAO should focus setting global standards for fisheries management.

Leonardo Maridueña (Ecuador) highlighted his country's regulatory measures to implement the CCRF.
