Highlights for Tuesday, 13 April 2010

The First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa, met for its second day on Tuesday, 13 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

In the morning, delegates met in two plenary sessions on disaster risk reduction and filling information gaps.

In the afternoon, delegates reconvened in the session on filling information gaps and thereafter participated in a sessions on capacity building and user perspectives.

Delegates also attended a number of side events throughout the day.

IISD RS will be providing limited daily digital coverage and a summary report of the conference.

Plenary Sessions

Amos Makarau, Department of Meteorological Services, Zimbabwe, presented on the status and plans for weather, water and climate observing systems in Africa.

The dais during the session on disaster risk reduction, L-R: Abbas Gullet, Red Cross, Kenya; Simon Mason, International Research Institute for Climate and Society, USA; Dulce Chilundo, Disaster Management Institute, Mozambique;Helena Molin-Valdés, UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction; and Yadowsun Boodhoo, Meteorological Services, Mauritius.

Abbas Gullet, Secretary-General, Red Cross, Kenya, gave a presentation on moving towards preparedness and response.

The dais during the session on filling information gaps. Anthony Nyong (center), African Development Bank, co-chaired the session.
