The Arctic Biodiversity Congress, scheduled to take place from 2-4 December 2014 in Trondheim, Norway, will promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity through dialogue among scientists, policy-makers, government officials, industry, civil society and indigenous peoples. The Congress is organized and hosted by the Arctic Council’s Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) working group in co-operation with the Norwegian Environment Agency.
The contents of the Congress has been guided and structured by the following goals:
to present and discuss the main scientific findings in the Arctic Biodiversity Assessment (ABA);
to facilitate inter-disciplinary discussions, action and status updates on the ABA recommendations among scientists, government officials, policy makers, traditional knowledge holders, indigenous peoples and industry representatives;
to provide scientific, indigenous, policy, NGO, academia and industry audiences the opportunity to collaborate around the themes of the ABA;
to advise CAFF on national and international implementation of the ABA recommendations and on development of an Action for Biodiversity: Implementing the Recommendations of the ABA 2013-2021 implementation plan for the Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting in 2015;
to highlight the work of CAFF and the Arctic Council in circumpolar biodiversity conservation and sustainable development; and
to mainstream biodiversity and ecosystem services ensuring that the recommendations of the ABA are implemented by not just governments, but many organizations and people, and across sectors.
The Congress will convene sessions and presentations on three main themes: Arctic change, resilience and adaptation; mainstreaming biodiversity and linking Arctic ecosystems to society; and understanding cumulative effects and managing impacts. There will also be special sessions focusing on case studies and scenario planning.
Outputs of the Congress include: Co-Chairs’ s report, providing an overview of Congress content and a summary of main findings; reports on session outcomes provided to CAFF; outreach and documentation through CAFF’s websites; scientific publication on selected papers and presentations; outreach to a global audience, including through IISD’s Reporting Services; networking opportunities, inspiration and additional benefits to participants; and the Congress will act as CAFF’s contribution to the Third International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP III).
IISD RS will produce daily web and Twitter coverage and a summary from the three-day Congress. Kindly return to this site on Tuesday, 2 December 2014, for more information.
