Highlights for Wednesday, 13 May 2009

ICCM2 convened for its third day in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, 13 May 2009.

During the morning plenary, delegates continued discussions on the evaluation of and guidance on implementation and review and update of SAICM. The topics of modalities for reporting by stakeholders on progress in implementation and the adoption of the budget were also introduced. The Conference also agreed to establish a contact group on budget, which met over lunch.

In the afternoon plenary, delegates discussed: the implementation of and coherence among international instruments and programmes; strengthening of national chemicals management capacities; information exchange and scientific and technical cooperation; and cooperation with intergovernmental organizations.

The contact group on emerging issues convened throughout the day and into the evening. The contact group on financing met in the afternoon.

Karel Blaha, EU, noted the European Community’s significant financial contributions to SAICM.
Mariann Lloyd-Smith, IPEN, supported a proposal to form a steering committee to develop a wider range of indicators for monitoring implementation.
Tarek Elruby, Egypt, supported a draft resolution on regional activities and coordination introduced by Jamaica.
