Highlights for Thursday, 14 May 2009

ICCM2 high-level segment convenes

ICCM2 convened for the first day of its high-level segment in Geneva, Switzerland on Thursday, 14 May 2009.

During the morning, delegates convened in plenary and considered the future of the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety (IFCS), but did not conclude the issue. Further discussion was deferred to the emerging issues contact group.

In the afternoon the high-level segment convened and delegates heard statements by UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner, Ministers, and heads of delegations. The SAICM award ceremony was held Thursday afternoon. Plenary also met in an evening session to continue its work. In the evening plenary, delegates adopted the SAICM rules of procedure.

The contact groups on emerging issues and on financing convened throughout the day. The contact group on financing also convened in the evening.

Darlington Mwape, Zambia, stressed that most African countries are faced with the threat of the inflow of e-waste.
Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, stressed that a climate deal in Copenhagen may also have benefits for the chemicals agenda.
Maria Farani Azevêdo, Brazil, said the QSP was an indispensable tool with an innovative approach.
